One of my favourite things to do at Christmas is to sit in front of our Christmas tree, in the darkness of the room, and gaze at the light and splendour of the tree. Our tree is an old, rather rough-looking artificial tree with decorations that hold the memories of our parents, of former students, of friends and family, and of our many years of celebrating Christmas with our children. It is an "awe"some experience to sit in the stillness and quiet and gaze at the light.
Part of the brilliance is the reflection of the light on the ornaments. The light glances off the objects around it and produces so much more light and beauty.
The tree itself represents the permanence and stability that holds and allows the beauty of the light. The green colour assures us of the renewal of life and hope for the future. The renewal of the unfailing promise of the gift of a Savior, Jesus Christ.
Today, I invite you to sit for a few minutes and just enjoy the splendour of your own tree. Bask in the light, in the memories, in the beauty that is there. Savor a moment of stillness and presence.
Then carry that stillness and light to the tasks at hand and to the people you encounter. Let your light reflect loving presence, calm, joy, and beauty.
